Lawton, Oklahoma is a town in the far east of the United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Arkansas River in Stephens County and is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Lawton were traders from Canada who stopped there on their way downriver to Fort Gibson in 1819. They named it "Fort Hennepin" after General David Hennepin, who had fought against Mexico before being captured and sent to Texas as a prisoner of war. In 1907, Lawton became an incorporated town when it was annexed by Tulsa. The post office was established in 1912 and remained open until 1957; during that time, Lawton served as the only post office in Stephens County. The first oil well was drilled in Lawton in 1916 by John Crain and his son-in-law Jens Langevin with help from local men Augustus Beattie and Olin Wittek. The wells were soon followed by other exploration and production wells until 1969 when production ended due to low oil prices; however, this did not stop people from coming to drill there anymore because they knew that oil would come back around again someday. A new shopping center opened up near Interstate 25 in 2001 which helped spur development within the town since then (it has since been renamed "Lawton Town Center"). Additionally, Lawton's water supply started becoming available for city residents starting in 1985 which made life much easier for those living closeby (known as "the Watertowns"). And finally, just last year, a new stadium called "Alamo Stadium" opened its doors thanks to a partnership between Letcher County Schools District No. 1 and Alamo Bowl LLC which will now be home to both football games along with other events throughout the year (including concerts).
