The first permanent white settler in what would becomeLawnton arrived in 1836 with intentions of trading goods with local natives including some Chukchee people living nearby at Canyon Lake on the headwaters of Concho River: They named their new settlement after their friend John Lawtons older brother General George Fenton lawman who died shortly after making these transactions: Gentryville (now Wilburforce). After landing they built a log cabin which served as their mainstay until 1840 when they erected a more efficient brick home which still stands today - still used as a family home & office building! Shortly thereafter two other families arrived bringing further commerce and industry; these were Ulysses S Grant & his wife Emma Snively Grant born about 1840-1841 at Canandaigua Rapids on Pawnee River just outside Independence MO: These Grants operated an early stage gristmill hereabouts before moving upriver into what is now Wichita Falls TX where they ran a cattle ranching empire!
