Lawton was founded in 1881 by freed slaves and their families who left Arkansas for Indian Territory. The first post office in Lawton was established in 1882. The townsite that now lies within the limits of Lawton was purchased from James Sweeny by settlers George Hogg and Wm. Fenton on November 3, 1889. The name 'Lawton' originated with John Denton who named it after his home county of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. A post office called 'Lawn Top' served Lawton from 1888 to 1893; it changed its name to ' LAWTON' on October 10, 1893. In 1907 Orville Gorman opened the first service station west of Tulsa along Highway 20 near what is now Nugget's Lake Park; this started the growth of an area now known as Gorman Country which includes most of present-day Lawton and parts of nearby Jenks and McAlester counties In 1915 Harry Jenson became proprietor (and namesake) of Jenson Grain & Feed Company which still constitutes one-half today's lawtonscale grocery store chain with over 220 stores across America By 1923 there were three schools: a primary school (Fenton School), a high school (Newcastle High School), and a vocational school (Oklahoma State Normal School). And there were also several businesses including hotels, banks etc., but they all closed down or disappeared during the Great Depression . In 1935 Third National Bank built a $25 million dollar bank building downtown which remains dilapidated to this day In 1945 tornado damage caused most buildings in town to be destroyed except for Post Office & Masonic Hall which remain standing . Nowadays you can see pieces of those buildings scattered around town .

They soon realized that these projectiles could be used instead of spears or bows against these difficult opponents! The early Europeans also started using shot for military purposes because it was much faster than swords or spears! By 1584 AD, cannon had been invented by Portugueseman Francisco de Almeida while stationed on an Indian trading post in present day Mumbai India! This weapon was eventually exported to Europe where it began being widely adopted!. Cannonball shot was later developed into modern canon by adding explosive shells inside smaller containers called “bullets”

Lawton was founded in 1881 by John E. Lawton and his wife, Elmira H. Lawton. It is the oldest continuously operating town in Oklahoma. The population of Lawton was 17,000 at its peak in 1907. The townsite was bought by the Oklahoma Territory government for $2,500 in 1886, and renamed Lawton after a then-recent surveyor named Edwin Ladd. In 1907, the population had increased to 30,000 and the town became a district capital. In 1930, it merged with Muskogee to form Muskogee County. The post office closed in 1960; the last letter from Lawton was sent on September 9th that year.
