Jenks is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 20 miles east of the state capital, Oklahoma City. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. Jenks is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Jenks were the Wichita people who settled in what is now Jenks in 1867. A post office called Jenks was established in 1878, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1908, a community named after General James Bledsoe was developed on land near present-day Jenks Boulevard and I-40 exit 246. The town name came from General Bledsoe's role as a cavalry general during the Indian Wars and his ownership of several thousand acres (800 hectares) of land around Jenks. The first store opened in 1908 and soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. The community continued to grow until it reached its current size around 1950 when Interstate 40 began construction north of town and destroyed much of the original development downtown. In 1951, General Hodge purchased 4200 acres (1600 hectares) northeast ofJenkins from J C Moore for $5 million dollars which became known as Hodge Land (now part of Tulsa). This purchase madeJenkins one of Oklahoma's largest towns by acreage; only Tulsa had more land than Jenkins at that time. Hodge also donated 3 blocks south off I-40 to form Memorial Park which currently contains two high schools, three churches, multiple businesses and residences dating back to the early 1900s. In 2007, an estimated $27 million dollar project started to renovate all 6 buildings on Main Street inside Memorial Park including restoration/remodeling Ofhistoric homes including 2 Colonial Revival style homes from 1928 & 1930 with original wood burning stove’s & oven’s still extant! These home are being restored with new flooring and paint job!
