The town was founded in 1907 by John Jenks and his wife Emma. The name came from a local stream called "Jenks." In 1915, the Jenks family moved to an area near recombining creek known as the "Potawatomi Country" because they were among the first farmers there. In 1922, John's son George changed the name of the stream to "Jenks Creek." In 1960, residents decided to change their name to Jenks after Wanda Jenkins who had given them cookies when they moved into their new home on Main Street. Wanda's husband Bill also helped write and sign the ordinance making it official on October 15th of that year. That same year, construction began on what would become Jenks Elementary School which opened in 1961. Since then, Jenks Elementary has been home to many great people such as Mrs. Clinton Johnson (currently Mayor), Dr. Tyrone Green (Presidential Candidate for 2016), Mr./Ms./Dr., Rick Cook (Mayor Pro Tem.), Tammy Fisher (Former Sheriff), Randy Peckham ( Former Representative) and more!
