Jenks is a small town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Jenks is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River. It lies within the Jenks Micropolitan Statistical Area which has a population of 5,815. The land that would become Jenks was first settled by various Native American groups in what is now Stephens County. The first European to come to what is now Jenks was Nicholas de la Salle in 1698-99 when he and his band of Jesuits were exploring northwest Missouri for new missionary work. He named one of his rivers after Saint John Baptist and founded a mission here in 1718-19. In 1881, William Atherton built a sawmill on the river near present day Jenks and began trading goods with settlers in nearby Indian Territory (the Oklahoma Territory at that time). In 1889, Atherton's son Amos bought land from George Purdy and started farming there. By 1901, Amos had erected a two-story whitesmith shop and blacksmith shop on the north side of Main Street where he lived with his family until his death in 1955. One year later, he donated land around these buildings to the local school board for use as classrooms and playgrounds; this donation remains today as Main Street Elementary School property. In 1907, reeds being grown along the Arkansas River were used to make corduroys for cavalry horses; this led to an early industry here that produced clothing for both military service abroad (e.g., World War I) as well as domestic consumption by farmers across America during those years. By 1916, agricultural production had increased sufficiently so that JENKS INDUSTRIES & CO., LTD., was organized with Chas Wagoner as president/manager; this company manufactured hayseed oil products until it merged into Unilever Products North America plc.—a group controlled by Rupert Murdoch—in 1978.[1] In 1920s-1930s much of Jenks' manufacturing occurred within UNILEVER PRODUCTS NORTH AMERICA plc.'s livestock feed mills which processed corn fed lumps or meal through crushing devices into small pieces suitable for fermentation into gasoline fuel oil (C5), diesel fuel (B6), kerosene (A4), lubricants (L3) etc.;[2] however some Jennifer Mills clothing manufactories also operated during those years such as HERSHEY & SONS CO.(Champion Garment Mfg.) outside town limits producing overalled women's cloth goods until 1949 when it became part of THE HERSHEY CORPORATION;[3] while other businesses closed including

On October 5th, 1907, five people were killed when local ranchers opened fire on a group of settlers who had gathered to harvest corn near their farmstead. This event remains one of the most tragedy-related events in Jenks' history.
