Jenks, Oklahoma is a city in Comanche County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,919 at the 2010 census. Jenks is the county seat of Comanche County. It is also the second-largest city in the state after Tulsa. The first people to live in Jenks were the Kiowa and Acoma Indians who came from northcentral Mexico in 1828. They built a small village on an east-west stream that flows through Jenks. The town was founded by George Westfall Jenks in 1887 as a result of land deal with neighboring Indian Territory government officials. The name "Jenks" was given to him by his friend John Sibley while they were both living in Indian Territory as part of a wagon train traveling from Fort Gibson to Wichita Falls, Texas on November 15, 1887. During World War II, Alonzo Menard became one of the largest employers in Jenks with his corporation Alcoa shuttering its operations at their new plant across the street from where present day First National Bank now stands during World War II but later reopen due to post-war prosperity. In 1949 Alcoa moved its headquarters back into their old plant located down south off I-25 just outside of Jenks proper when it merged with American Cyanamid Company becoming one of America's largest chemical companies until it went bankrupt in 1991 along with other large industrial firms during what has come to be known as the "Tech Panic". Asbestos contamination discovered at various plants throughout centralOklahoma following deregulation led to company bankruptcy and announced job loss of up to 1/3 million Americans including many thousands jobs lost within months leading up to opening of most major UPNL facilities which saved them (and vast majority of employment) despite massive layoffs and retirements overall over those same years although some private companies such as Alcoa did manage significant resurrection even though public health concerns led eventually all these closures aftermath). A year later EPA finally opens enforcement actions against numerous asbestos pollution sources resulting largest bans ever placed on any single productoutside home alone windows and smaller areas inside homes ever again making this country virtually free from horrendous air pollution for short period followed by exponential growth rates for particular pollutant not only causing great economic damage but disastrous health consequences culminating more than 50 years later with current level Air Quality Index values exceeding 100

Jenks became an incorporated town in 1907. It lost its city status in 1959 and has since been a rural community with a small commercial center. The history of Jenks dates back to 1881 when settlers from Illinois arrived in the area and found land that would later become Muskogee County. The first post office was established at Jenks on July 15, 1881. The name of the town derived from John Jenkins who settled there around 1840. development of the towns began soon after and by 1886, all but two blocks of the original downtown had been developed as businesses or residences. In 1907, Jenks Incorporated was created when several adjacent communities consolidated into one entity for business purposes only; this included much of what is now the northwest side of downtown today. In 1959, however, Jenkins reverted to its rural form and ceased operations as an incorporated municipality effective December 31st that year due to financial woes which forced it to file for bankruptcy protection some years prior (the same yearsaw also significant growth within neighboring Bartlesville) Despite this setback though; many continue to call Jenkins home including current Mayor Donny Huffman who served until his retirement in 2016
The Jenks community was founded in 1907. The first post office was opened in 1911. The population of Jenks increased rapidly from its early days, and by 1915 there were over 100 residents. By the 1940s, Jenks had become a major agricultural center, with many businesses and residences located on the east side of town. During World War II, Jenks played an important role in the local military effort, supplying goods and services to soldiers stationed throughout the area. In 1947, the city decided to join Oklahoma City as a municipal government. In the 1960s and 1970s,Jenks experienced growth due toEOVIDA drug abuse which caused some social unrest. During this time many homes were torn down and replaced with high-rise apartments or shopping malls. However, recent economic conditions have led to some loss of jobs and decline in population values; however, overall downtownJenks remains vibrant and thriving today
