4/1/1997 - Jenks, Oklahoma was the first city in the United States to recognize holster usage as a form of self-defense. On January 5, 1911, the Jenks Police Department adopted a policy of allowing citizens to carry handguns without obtaining permits from police. This became law after a large public outcry. 2/15/1913 - The Jenks Gun Club was founded and began carrying handguns for people who wanted them. 3/5/1914 - The first concealed handgun permit program in the United States was established in Jenks by then-Chief Deputy Sheriff Harry A. Jenks, Oklahoma is a town in Beaver County, Oklahoma on the Iowa River. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first white person to live in Jenks was John Jenks who arrived in 1871. The present day town was platted in 1902 by Nelsons A. Prentice and his wife Eliza Goudreau Prentice. In 1907 the townsite name was changed to Jenks after Jens Jensen, an early settler from Sweden who had come through the area in 1867. In 1915 Jenks became one of 105 townsites consolidated into Tulsa under the terms of an Act of Congress establishing Tulsa Municipal District No. 3. The consolidation resulted from a movement by residents of several nearby towns to consolidate their local government under a single municipal authority so that they could better compete with their larger city neighbor.
