Jenks is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Jenks is part of the Edmond Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Jenks was John Jenkins who built a cabin on the east side of the Arkansas River in 1872. A post office called Jenkins was established in 1876, and remained open until 1907. The first school in Jenks was built in 1881 by Mrs. Dora Hogue. In 1905, Jenks became a city with its own government and economy. In 1961, when Oklahomans voted to secede from the United States and become an independent country, Jenks chose to remain within the Oklahoma state government as an incorporated city under the name of "Oklahoma City". On July 16th of that year,Oklahoma City renamed itself "Jenkins" after John Jenkins and his wife Gertrude Cramer Jenkins who donated land for what would eventually become the downtown area today. Since then, much has changed both physically and economically inside of Jenks - such as several high-rise buildings being developed along Northwest 30th Street near Interstate 44 which now anchors one end of downtown while also housing many businesses including Verizon Wireless (now known as Oath Communications), International Paper Company (now known as First Data) and JCPenney Department Stores - all sizable employers whose economic impact has directly impacted many residents' everyday lives outside of work or school opportunities; more recently still major league baseball's Oklahoma City Sooners playing their home games at McAlester High School across from downtown; new development nearby once again bringing jobs into town while providing significant retail space for locals who are frequently seeking out local restaurants; etc., all indicative not only of just how activeJenkins has been since it reestablished as an actual community but also how vibrant things have actually become since that time when almost no one could remember what it used to be like back when everything around here was pretty much just... you know... same old same old
