Jenks is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,362 at the 2000 census. Jenks is located on the eastern border of the Owasso County seat, Owasso. It lies south-southwest of Tulsa and north-northwest of Muskogee. The first settler in Jenks was Hiram Jennings who arrived in 1877 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on what is now Railroad Street. Other early settlers were James Fenton and his family, who settled about 1880; John Pritchard and his family, who moved to Jenks in 1886; Wm Hamer and his family, who arrived in 1893; Jno Cook, Sr., with his wife Martha Jane Cook in 1907; Ebenezer White with his children Harry (Harry), Norma (Norma Mae), Clyde (Clyde Ray) and Lynn White in 1912; Harry Cook again with wife Ethel White in 1922;Willard Byrd with wife Lillie Byrd and their four children born 1942-1945 at 4281 West Ada Rd.; Howard Bechtel with wife Evelyn Bechtel 1945-1948 at 4281 West Ada Rd.; Vernon Strouds 1949-1951 At 4012 North Eagleville Ave.;and Winthrop Griggs 1951-1953 At 4012 North Eagleville Ave. In 1903, Jesse Jenks bought land from George Nichols for $300 dollars and began to build a log home which still stands today on what is now Main Street. In 1909, he married Anna Mixon and together they started raising their five children here: Clarence, Jennie Addie Marie (Jennie), Louise Maynard (Louise May), Everett Melvin (-1976); Leroy Dudley (-1977). Jennies father had died when she was just six years old so her mother took over running the farm until 1938 when her husband came back into the picture again to take care of things while she finished high school then went off to college to get an education that would lead her to be an entrepreneur like her father had been before him. During World War II she worked as a cook for various military camps across the US but I'm not sure if she ever mentioned this blog post actually happened or not because it's something that's too boring for me to write about haha! In 1948 Mrs Jenkins sold all their holdings except for one acreage east of Main Street which they kept until 1959 when they sold it all again due to health concerns brought on by uranium mining near by so they could move closer to their daughter/son-in law’s new job opportunity! They also donated two acres adjacent to their house on Cedar Avenue Northwest which still remains as part of our park today! After living here for almost sixty years Mrs Jenkins passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on July 6th 2018 at age 94 years old! A Celebration will take place August 17th thru 23rd 2018 followed by burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery afterwards! She leaves behind five beautiful grandchildren including my niece Sara Pryor Flood (granddaughter #1) along with many nephews/nieces spread throughout Arkansas, Texas & Oklahoma!!!
