Jenks was founded in 1881 as a post office and community center on the east side of the Arkansas River. It became an agricultural center during World War I due to its natural resources and its location near the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation. In 1925, Jenks became a city with a population of 5,000 people. The city's growth continued through the years until it reached its present size in 1960 with 10,500 residents. The early history of Jenks can be traced back to 1881 when two men named James and Jesse Jenkins established a post office at what is now known as Jenks (the name given to them by local officials). James Jenkins had previous experience as an Agent for Indian Affairs and knew how important it was for his new community to have an official presence. He also believed that education would play an important role in shaping Jenks into a lasting society. In 1925, when Jenks became a city, it boasted some of the most advanced technology available at the time: A water tower/pumping system allowing citizens access to clean water from wells all over town; electric lights; paved streets; and large yards providing ample space for farming practices which contributed greatly to the city's success during its early years. Jenks was founded in 1907 by E. H. Jenks and his wife, Lula. The town was named for Mrs. Jenks' maternal grandmother, Jennie Buhl, who had moved to the area from Germany several years earlier. In 1912, the Jenks family donated land to the town for a school district and a post office. The first building in Jenks was a one-room schoolhouse that served as the town's only facility for public education until 1924 when a second building was constructed. In 1936, the US Post Office moved from its original location to what is now Jenkins Elementary School. That same year, Jenks saw its first organized football game between local high schools; East Renfrow won 24-0 at home. From then until 1944,Jenkins enjoyed success in both boys and girls soccer tournaments with teams that earned top honors each season. In 1951,Jenkins began hosting its own weekly farmers market which continued until 1985 when it became an annual event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. In 1957, Jenkins established itself as an important center of regional trade through establishment of its own manufacturing plant; this activity would continue until 1978 when it closed due to lack of profitability. In 1979,Jenkins experienced another significant milestone with inauguration of its current mayor/council system following passage of legislation establishing such structure in Oklahoma City Municipal Code § 6-1-501 et seq.; this event marked the beginning of a long period during which Jenkins held elected government authority within their community despite being located some ninety miles away from downtown Oklahoma City on Interstate 35W (the "I-35W Corridor"). Since 1990s various businesses have relocated or closed within Jenks limits - most notably Fidelity Investments (1993), Hobby Lobby Stores (2005) and Pohl's Department Store (2009). However smalltown sentiment has not been quashed - many people maintain strong ties to Jenkins through social events included in their calendar like pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings at Stroudsburg Baptist Church or Fourth Street FarmersMarket Luncheon where they share recipes and stories around the mealtime table
