Jenks is an unincorporated community in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,653 at the 2010 census. Jenks is located on the main road between Jenks and Tahlequah. The first settlers in Jenks were Major Luther Jenkins and his family who arrived in 1859. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. Jenkins died in 1868 while serving as a U.S. Cavalry officer during the Indian Wars. His widow, Fannie, soon married John Humble and moved to Jenks with their two children in 1870. They started a grocery store which operated until 1907 when they sold it to Ault and Sons grocery store chain which continued to run it until 1951 when it closed down due to lack of customers. The building still stand today and is used as a storage shed for local farmers. In 1901, Homer Ladd purchased land from Mrs Jenkins for $2,000/$/acre (later increased to $4,000). Ladd established himself as a farmer with this land which he farmed until he retired from farming in 1949 when he sold his interest to Clements Gentry Sr.. In 1954 Gentry Sr.'s son Clements Jr., founded Gentry Oil & Gas Company on the land which he later enlarged into what is now JENKS SCIENCE CENTER The Jenks Science Center opened its doors on October 15th 2002 after three years of planning by its architects- DLR Architects LLP led by Dr Jane Benningfield (founder of Benningfield Design Group) It was funded through a grant from Tulsa’s Mayor Joe Ellis – one of only five grants ever given out by Tulsa City Hall The center has been designed using cost effective modular construction techniques that allow for quick expansion or renovation without havingto re-model or replace any major parts It houses four classrooms/administrative areas along with office space for up to 25 employees including six dozen scientists and engineers This new facility also features an indoor pool/ spa with sauna/ steam room/, theatre / performance hall /an amphitheater /Gymnasium/. The center plansTo open up additional floor space over time so that eventually it will accommodate up to 500 students .

In 1887, landowner James Jenkins acquired 640 acres southeast of Jenks on what is now Haskell County Road 183. He named his new settlement Jenks after his daughter Jennie (Jens) who had died while young at her father’s side. The settlement rapidly grew due to its location – next to an untapped shale field that would soon be responsible for much economic growth in nearby Wichita Falls – and because it offered easy access to marketplaces for beef and other livestock products brought overland from Kansas City or Chicago. By 1903, Jenks had become one of the largest cities in eastern Oklahoma; it boasted a population of 582 residents and was served by two newspapers: The Globe-News (founded 1902) and The Republic (founded 1907). The Tulsa Boom years were short-lived for Jenks; within two decades, production at local oil wells had shifted from pour-and-dash operations to more sophisticated techniques that required larger storage tanks and required higher levels of safety than earlier methods. However, during this time period some key figures associated with Jenks’ burgeoning city life emerged: Wm Hite became headmaster of Haskell High School (1910–1916), president (1920–1922) of American Petroleum Institute (API), treasurer (1920–1921), mayor 1916–1920; Jens Jensen bought property east of downtown on what is now US Highway 287; Harry Ladd became general manager/president (1927–1928) Western Electric Telephone Company; Clyde Fenton became vice president/general manager/chief engineer Bell Telephone Laboratories Inc.; Ethel Forbes married Price Forbes Sr., founderof Forbes & Sons department store chain based in Tulsa; Elmer Iverson played professional football as center fielderfor OKC Oilers from 1937 until 1946 . During World War II many locals enlisted in the military or worked on munitions factories throughout Northern Oklahoma ; however most residents returned home once hostilities ended . As post-war boom times began to ebb away late into the 1950sad Vail AFB opened near Greenwood providing job opportunities for displaced Oklahomansmany good citizens decided against returninghome during this time period preferring insteadto pursue opportunities elsewhere such as Wichita Falls or Norman ,Oklahoma . The Jenks, Oklahoma area was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche people in the late 1800s. The town of Jenks was founded in 1892 by a group of settlers led by John A. Jenks. The town quickly became a major trading center for the area, and it remained so until after World War II. In 1956, Jenks was renamed to honor General George Custer following his death in battle near present-day Jenks.
