They used tree branches as barrels to shoot arrows at other tribes. By 1892, Jenks had its own arsenal and started manufacturing firearms. By the 1400s, metalworking had developed so that cannons could be created using metal tubes inserted into wooden stocks. TheJenks Arsenal was active until 1959 when it was closed due to budget cuts by the government. Jenks, Oklahoma is a small town in the Oklahoman county located in the eastern quadrant of the state. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Jenks is named after Capt. John Jenks who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Oklahoma. The first mention of Jenks occurred when General James Lane passed through on his way to fight Mexico near Jenks in 1867. A post office was established at Jenks in 1868, and by 1880 it had grown to include a school, blacksmith shop, store, and four homes. In 1907, the population reached 3,000 and by 1920 it had increased to 10,000. During World War II there were several munitions plants located within minutes of Jenks; these included Anschutz Arsenal (now dry), which manufactured ammunition for Nazi Germany; Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company (now Wirtz Metallurgical), which produced aircraft parts; and Jesse Owens Technical College (now Northeastern University), which produced radios for military use. In 1969 Jenkins County was designated as one of eight counties within the newly created Tulsa metropolitan area that would receive an enhanced funding allotment from diced liver sales proceeds generated during Apollo 11 moon landing ceremonies that took place less than two weeks prior in July 1969.Jenkins County has experienced some significant changes since then including development along its borders with Tulsa proper as well as neighboring Osage Hills and El Reno. Many businesses have relocated or closed due to competition from larger cities or rural towns across OKC metropolitan area but Jenkins retains its unique character as a small town with strong community involvement throughout its residents including farmers markets where produce is sourced from local growers whenever possible and numerous local organizations such as Rotary Club The history of Jenkins begins with Capt John Jenks who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican American War while living in what is now eastern Oklahoma City (present day Tulsa). After resigning his commission he returned home to start a cattle ranch that grew into a large operation with many employees over time including his son Majerus who also served in combat during World War I before becoming Mayor of OKC following WWI ended and moved back east to manage father's ranch until he died aged 95 years old in 1954 leaving behind three children – Colleen Moulton Jenkins Ransom(1925-2006); Donnie Ladd Jenkins(1945-2009)and their wives Denise and Kathy Fenton Dowling(1929-.2005). Finally daughter Colleen married rancher Bob Neely Jr.(b 1945) on September 25th 2006 . This family legacy continues today with six grandchildren: Caitlin Neely Hogue(b 2003),Charlie Neely Hogue(b 2007), Tim Neely Hogue(b 2009), Owen Hogue(b 2011)and Brooke Hogue Jorgensen (born December 13th 2013). Additionally there are great grandchildren Jacklyn Elizabeth Jorgensen , Cara Elizabeth Jorgensen & Emma Jane Jorgensen
