Jenks is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon–Oakland, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The official name of Jenks is Jenksville but it was once known as Jensborough and Black Hawk. Jenks is located on U.S. Route 281 north-northwest of Muskegon Heights and 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Grand Rapids. The first settler in what would become Jenks was James Fenton who arrived in 1837 from England. He built a cabin near present day Jenksville on the east side of US 281. Other early settlers included John Crouch, Abram Knechtel and Peter Phelps and their families who arrived between 1839 and 1840 When US 421 was designated as the route to Detroit via Ionia Avenue in 1847, Jenks became an important stop for travelers going southward from that city. By 1860, there were over 50 buildings in Jenks with a population of 300 people including a hotel and grocery store operated by Elias Muth which still stands today next to US 281/2 just south of the old post office building on Main Street In 1863 when Battle Creek Township was established, Jenkins boundary changed from Muskegon County to its current boundaries including that of Grand Rapids County Emanuel Ladd purchased land east of present day Ionia Road in 1865 and started construction on what would become Ladd's Mills while also working on getting state funding to improve his land which he did with support from Eastman Kodak founder Nicholas Eastman In October 1870s Ladd donated 1 million acres (500 km²) to the University of Michigan for use as campus lands surrounding what would later be called Campus Martius within then newly created Wayne State University . The university rapidly acquired additional properties eastward reaching into present day Muskegon Heights until all but one block had been acquired by 1880 when enrollment reached 20,000 students . After years during which many members of both houses perished during an accidental fire at Kodak headquarters Burning Man event (now known as July 4th fireworks display), state legislation granted university control over all property west of Ionia Road except those inside City Limits . This gave rise to concern among some that asserted university expansion encroached upon residential neighborhoods northeast of Ionia Road while others saw it as an opportunity for development because much needed new facilities were available without having to worry about zoning issues
