Jenks is a small town in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located on the east bank of the Muskegon River between Jenks and El Reno. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1879 by James Jenkins, who named it for himself and his father-in-law, General John Jenkins. The first post office in Jenks was established in 1880. In 1902, Jenks became part of Tulsa County and then Oklahoma Territory. In 1907, Jenks residents voted to become an incorporated city under the name "Jenkins". However, this proposal failed to receive approval from county officials; as a result, Jenkins remains an unincorporated community today. In 1912, Jenks became a part of Tulsa County again and successfully applied for incorporation as a city with its own government - becoming one of only two cities in history to be both incorporated and have their own government (the other being Oakland California). In 1963, when Tulsa County merged into Oklahoma Statehood, Jenks remained within Oklahoma State but lost its city status; it reverted back to unincorporated status until 1993 when it reemerged as one of several OKC communities that were recognize by then-Oklahoma Governor George W. Bush as part of the newOKC Area Plan designation created pursuant to Amendments No. 2 and No. 3 to the Statute Law Revision Act (Laws 1959). Today, Jenks is home to many cultural attractions including several museums including The Art Museum of Tulsa (AMT) which has a collection that focuses on American Indian art from before contact with Europeans through traditional methods;[1] also located here are two Jackson County Courthouse historical buildings dating back to 1892 that serve as downtown anchor tenants;[2] while most notable is undoubtedly its vibrant downtown scene complete with lively nightlife venues such as The Balladry nightclub,[3][4] contemporary arts galleries like Gagosian Gallery,[5][6][7] high-end restaurants like Benaroya Grill & Market,[8][9][10][11][12] theaters like The Guthrie Theatre[13], cinemas like Regal Cinemas Tulsa[14], music venues such as Joe's Pub,[15][16] bars like Double Trouble Tavern,[17][18],[19],[20], golf courses such as Cherokee Hills Golf Club[21], dog parks,[22]- all without forgetting some highly trafficked arterial routes essential for local commerce: US 65/40 around OKC/Havilandtown (the heartland commercial district), I-35 W/Mallard Avenue NE/Norman Drive SW (a major shopping center), NW Expressway/I-44 NNE (chiefs highway), NW 36th Street NE (Jennings Boulevard)[23], etcetera
