Guymon, Oklahoma is a small town located in the panhandle of Oklahoma. The population was 9,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Guymon was founded in 1907 by J.W. "Tom" Hardesty and his brother-in-law Wm. Hiney as a small community on the banks of the Arkansas River just east of present day Guymon Elementary School and west of Robinson's lodge restaurant and general store. In 1912, Tom Hardesty donated land to create what would become Guymon High School; it opened its doors for classes in 1918. The townsite changed hands several times before it was purchased by local ranchers Dolphus and Belle Benson in 1956; they renamed it Bensonville after their daughter Belle Benson married Dolphus King, a native of nearby Jenks, Oklahoma who had moved to Oklahoman from Mississippi when he was ten years old. The originalixels here were laid out into blocks with one acre (0.40 hectares) for each home; this system continued until 1984 when an additional block was added per home due to population growth outside the original confines of town square - now known as Westside Square - which led to some confusion among residents over where to turn for water or electricity services during those early years since no street names were assigned within that central business district (CBD). In 1964, two schools – Guymon Elementary School (grades K-6) and Robinson’s Lodge Restaurant & General Store (grades 7-12) – merged operations into one building under then Superintendent John Clementson; grades 5 through 8 were relocated from their original locations on East Side Square into new buildings constructed on South Street NE just south of today’s First Baptist Church complex which served as both elementary/junior high school classrooms and also as administrative offices until 1982 when all four schools united again under new Superintendent Donnie Webber following countywide consolidation program that took effect that year resulting in creation of Tulsa Metropolitan Area with its own superintendent position within Tulsa County government structure including City Manager position title with authority over all city departments except public safety while City Council functions were vested exclusively with Mayor/Councilmember position title thereby eliminating any potential conflict between these two elected officials having primary responsibility for governance within their respective neighborhoods subject only to review by County Board members upon recommendation by Chieftain Deputy Sheriff assigned specifically thereto whose powers are delegated by Governor thereof pursuant to provisions set forth hereinbelowhereinbeforeprovidedwhichshallbe effective immediately upon passage hereof notwithstanding any contrary intention expressed hereinabove I hereby give my consent thereto duly authorized . . . . ." Today, there are more than 10,000 people living in downtownGuymon while many smaller businesses remain open along Spring St., Broadway Ave., South Main Street, West Side Square and other areas around town square including Westside Square which became known locally as "Westside" because most residents used this location for storage during construction projects going on throughout the late 1940s through early 1960s when downtown development shifted from center stage to new churches/. Guymon is a small town located in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskogee County, Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Guymon began as an agricultural community in 1907. In 1925, the post office was moved to Guymon from Jenks and it has been in that location ever since. In 1957, the first high school opened in Guymon and it remained in operation until 1999 when it merged with nearby Logan High School. In 1959, oil was discovered near Guymon and by 1965, production had reached 2 million barrels per day. The town grew rapidly due to this development and by 1970, there were over 10 businesses operating in town alone. However, during the 1990s recession, growth slowed significantly and by 1998 only 5 businesses remained open within the town limits. All of these businesses closed either because of economic decline or because they no longer met zoning requirements which caused cityhood for Guymon; however annexation has not ceased but rather has been sporadic at best so far (see map on right). Since incorporation as a city-county merger on November 30th 1998 all of these smaller businesses have re-opened including 3 liquor stores (one now closed) along with retail restaurants/cafeterias/bars etc., making up for what may have been lost during past consolidation years Today's economy revolves around health care services such as family planning clinics run by Planned Parenthood through contract with other organizations; real estate services such as remodeling and home repairs done by builders or developers; manufacturing jobs associated with plastics products being exported to Mexico City; truck stop gambling operations providing service to local customers who come ashore on Iuka Bayou Bridge crossing into OKC from Jenks or Yukon Indian Territory
The Guymon area was first inhabited by the Quahog people. In 1824, the US Cavalry under General John Custer made an attack on the village of Blackwater and burned it to the ground. The site is now known as Custer Hill. The next year, a group of United States Indian Agents led by Colonel James Fenton discovered gold in what is now Guymon. The town was founded in 1835 and named for Captain John A. Guymon who haddiscovered gold near the current location of Oklahoma City in 1828.
