The community name comes from the Wichita Mountains to the south of it. The town was named for General James H., who fought in the American Civil War and died at age 71 while commanding an army west of Chickasha Pass on July 8, 1885. The founding families were farmers with some ranching experience; their children went on to become successful men in their own right: John H., Jr., became a businessman and rancher; Harry C., served as state legislator (1948-51); and Virgil W., became mayor (1969-71). Guymon experienced economic development during World War II when the war stimulated business activity throughout the area. In 1951, Guymon welcomed its first female resident when Mrs. Addie Sells moved from far away Tulsa to purchase land east of town and open a grocery store that would serve as a model for other women entrepreneurs throughout America during that era. A new high school opened in 1959, followed by a new library in 1988; both are still operational today! In 1984, Local Schools District No.#5 merged with Muskogee County School District #3 forming what is now known as Muskogee County School District No.#1 . In 1997, GuyMON firemen responded to help fight an oil refinery fire which destroyed several homes within minutes of happening; this event has been called "the most dramatic response by local firefighters since they started being employed" In 2002-2003, work began on building an addition to Harmon Elementary School which included classrooms, offices/library lounge areas, gymnasiums/ wrestling mats etc.; construction stopped due to lack of funding after just one year but resumed afterwards under more recent leadership Overall, there have been many positive changes over time including: growth rates for various sectors (employment (+10% per year), housing (+15%, +50% since 2007) GAGA score increase (+2 points/year), significant decrease in crime rate (-40%)

In addition to their farm, they also purchased some property on the edge of town from a local farmer. This property served as the starting point for much of the development of Guymon over the years. The first buildings were built in what is now downtown Guyton around 1909-1910. At that time, it was only a small township with just a few homes and businesses - most of which were situated along Main Street near where present day Interstate 44 crossesriver. The farms that formed the core of downtownGuyton continued to be used for farming until about 1970 when all but one farm ceased operations and became residential properties again! Over time, some changes have occurred within the population of downtownGuyton - primarily due to annexation by other nearby towns during various rounds of consolidation within Oklahoma during the late 1800s and early 1900s (see below). However, many aspects of downtown's past remain significant today including its architectural styles (the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style is particularly prevalent), Its economy (primarily based upon agriculture), Its social services (especially those providing education, health care, and welfare assistance), And even some examples from its residents themselves such asGuyton High School which still uses its original name!
