Guymon is a small town located in the panhandle of Oklahoma, about 15 miles east of Tulsa. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It has Historic significance as an Old West settlement and as the home ofOklahoma's first post office. The town was founded by George A. Guymon in 1875, after he abandoned his previous home on the Creek Nation near Muskogee. He named his new settlement after himself, since he had already become well-known in the area for his cattle and horse trading businesses. In 1876, Guymon opened up what became known as "the East Fork of the Arkansas River," which bordered on what is now Wichita County. This allowed him to trade goods with people from all over Oklahoma and Kansas City. In 1907, Guymon erected a wooden frame post office building that still stands today within walking distance of his original storehouse/market place (now a museum). The building served as the town's main function until it was replaced by a more recent structure in 1916. At that time, the old post office closed its doors forever and became known as "the Hall" due to its strategic location within easy reach of many residents. In 1951, when Oklahoma State University moved to Owasso and established their campus there, they required all students living on or adjacent to their campus to move into dormitories following their initial opening date in September 1951. As a result of this change in status for Guymon's then-population of 3644 souls (of which only 2161 resided on campus), most residents vacated their homes and relocated elsewhere within minutes of learning about OSU's plans! In 1956, when OU began offering undergraduate degrees at its then-newcampus off Campus Road #2 just north of I-40; fellow Oklahoman John Schieffer donated land adjoining OSU's east side for this purpose; and OKC annexed Washita County under statehood on November 16th 1959 making Guymon once again an official city limits community! Consequently, with regard to residential acreage within city limits: it increased from 3 acres per student residing during those years prior thereto to nearly 8 acres now! The current incarnation of Guymon began developing rapidly after OU ceased operations at its current location southward along I-40 just west of downtown Tulsa upon OU’s official closure less than one year later on August 31st 1960 (prioritized among other nearby universities expanding beyond Tulsa). With much Of early development coming courtesy BOE industrious citizens who saw potential not only for commerce but also educationally significant leadership positions downwind thruout Central Oklahoma; thus developing numerous blocks bisected by Kossuth Street & US 71 immediately surrounding downtown including what used currently houseing Jim Weiler’s personal apartments retail business SOUTHWEST OF DOWNTOWN TULSA - continuing until present day
