Guymon is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The post office was established in 1907 and was renamed Guymon in 1934. The population was 1,497 at the 2000 census. In 2009, the town had an estimated population of 1,711. The first settler to arrive in what is now Guymon was John Cramer in 1868. He found land on the banks of the Arkansas River near present-day Haskell City. What is now Guymon was first called "Cramer's Ferry" and then "Ferry Landing." A post office named Ferry Landing was established at this spot on October 17, 1875. The name changes again for a number of years until it is given as its current appellation by settlers John Davenport and his brother Osgood Davenport in 1886 when they purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land from James Guthrie for $5 per acre ($/ha). In 1909, the townsite ofGuymon were platted by Durward Ladd with 5 lotsnumbered 2 through 10. It should be noted that these Lots 2 through 10 were all located along busy Route 54 which skirts the edge of town center making it easy to find them even today! The town site plat contained 7 buildings: one schoolhouse (built 1876), two churches (1887 & 1889), three stores (1897), one garage (1907), and one telephone exchange (1927). All but one building have been preserved or are still standing today; only the schoolhouse has been deteriorating over time and needs restoration/recovery according to current plans! As can be seen from this map there were quite a few early businesses active within our old downtown core including: J P Haynes grocery store (1877-81), Wm Beasley blacksmith shop(1879-80), Hemsley’s dry goods store(1881-83), Fritchey’s farm implement store(1885-87)… just to name a few! However, a large majority of businesses closed down during prohibition due to difficulties obtaining liquor licenses thereby eliminating many local jobs which contributed heavily to economic stability during that time period! Even though prohibition ended in OKlahoma proper less than two months after it came into effect statewide on April 16th 1921 things didn’t stay quiet long however as several new businesses started up quickly such as J M Smith Bootlegging Co.(1920s+)and G W Griffith Carpentry & Woodworking Center which actually thrived until around 1970 when production suddenly went off track due to lack of customers….. leaving behind some very nice buildings including both original garages 🙂 currently used as apartments !
Guymon was founded in 1907 by a group of farmers and landowner. The town grew rapidly due to the demand for agricultural goods produced in the area. The town became an important transportation and business center, and its residents developed a strong community spirit. In 1912, Guymon won the inaugural Oklahoma State Fair, which helped jumpstart its growth. By 1920, the town had triple its population and was using electricity from a power plant that was built nearby. In 1922, Guymon became one of the first towns in Oklahoma to implement fluoridation of water supplies as part of public health initiatives. By 1930, Guymon had reached its peak population with over 1,000 citizens. However, during World War II many businesses closed down due to wartime rationing and economic restrictions. As a result, the population declined gradually until it stopped growing completely after the war ended in 1945. In recent years, some efforts have been made to revive Guymon's economy through various ventures such as tourism or agriculture.
