In 1902, it became a station on the Great Western Railway and later served as its eastern terminus. In 1907, it was renamed to honor Major General James Fenton Guymon, who had been killed in action during World War I.In 1932, ownership of the railroad passed from The Great Western to Texas Central Railroad and then to CN Railroads before becoming part of Union Pacific Railroad system until privatized in 1984. The town experienced economic stagnation during the late 20th century and 2000s due to numerous natural disasters including floods caused by rains from Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and 2004; an oil spill that contaminated ground water near Guymon in 2006; and wildfires that burned for weeks across much of Muskogee County in 2007-2008. However, recent development has helped revive local businesses and support local cultures within Guymon's boundaries such as arts & crafts programming and traditional Indian festivals (such as Powwow). Guymon has two schools: one public school serving grades K-8th grade and one private school serving grades 9-12thgrade students. There are also several churches which serve all types of worshipping needs within the area including Baptist/ Methodist/ Episcopal services along with Hinduism services once every few years or so. The post office closed down around 2009 but was reopened briefly by USPS after they bought back their former property nearby (now known as Heritage Hills).
Guymon was founded in 1907 by George Guymon, a rancher and business man. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, due to the availability of water and land for farming. In 1930, the first post office was established in Guymon. By 1940, the population had reached 1,500 residents. During World War II, many local businesses made contributions to the war effort, including manufacturing munitions. After the war ended, the population grew slowly again until it reached 2,000 people in 1960. In that year, a new courthouse and jail were built in town. The population continued to grow until it reached 3,000 residents in 1980. In that year, a new elementary school was opened in town. Since then, growth has been relatively steady; as of 2010 there are over 4200 residents living in town.
