The town was founded in 1907 and named for General John Guymon, who had served as a brigadier general in the Mexican–American War. Guymon is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and its name comes from French meaning "river mouth". In 1907, General John Guymon donated land to establish the town on which it stands today. At that time there were no rapids or waterfalls in what is now Logan County so river access was Limited. Smedley Witherington organized a church committee to explore ways to provide services for his congregation not too far from where he lived (the current location of Planned Parenthood). Reverend Witherington soon realized that there would be an immediate need for priests and ministers to help lead worship services for this growing community. He designed and built the first church building on Main Street within two years of starting operations; it was dedicated on November 3, 1910 by Bishop Edwin Ransom (the founder of Tulsa.) Reverend Witherington also laid out streets and platted school districts which remain part of present day Guymon Village neighborhood including West Side Road east of Railroad Avenue, Oak Lawn Drive north-west of I-45/US 76 exit 362 (now Kansas Ave.), North Side Drive east of US 66/I-44 exit 388 (now Delaware Ave.), South Side Drive west of I-44/US 80 exit 388 (now Elmira Rd.), Abbey Road northeast corner opposite Interstate 45 entrance ramp with Haskell School one block away One local legend has it that when pioneer Revs Smedley Witherington and Edwin Ransom met they both agreed that if any place could become a Christian center then it would be here at Guymon junction - thus "GuyMON" became known throughout OKLAHOMA as "The Center Of Christianity." After World War II Monk Brewster established an Evangelist Mission outpost serving allOklahoma near present day Wichita Falls before moving permanently into Texas in 1958 . In 1961 construction began on what becomes known as Holy Cross Catholic Church & Chapel which replaced an old Methodist church burned down by arsonists just days after opening its doors - becoming oneof Oklahoma's most iconic landmarks .Today Holy Cross Catholic Parish continues to serve Oklahomans through education outreach programs online & thru parishes across Oklahoma
