In 1951, Oklahoma became an independent state and the name of the state capital changed from Guthrie to Oklahoma City. In 1957, Guthrie became a city limits settlement with a population of only 508 residents when it annexed into Oklahoma City proper. By 1969, Oklahoma City had expanded out to include all of Howard County as well as most or all of Tulsa County including downtown which had become an important center for commerce and culture. The closure of oil production in 1974 led to a severe recession inOklahoma City that caused many job losses and increased traffic congestion on I-40W known then as "The Great Mile." However, due to community activism spearheaded by Mayor David Glasscock (D), efforts were made to redevelop Downtown into an arts district anchored by The Performing Arts Center (TPC). Today Downtown is home to some of Oklahoma City's most popular restaurants and nightlife attractions including Five Points Live Art District; Oktoberfest celebration at Oktoberfest Hall; Robinson Building apartments; Federal Reserve Bank building; etc., making it one of the most vibrant areas inOKC today
