One of the most famous gun slingers in Oklahoma was Dave Kilgore, better known as Big Bill Hickock. He was born in 1907 in what is now Haskell County, Oklahoma and spent his childhood shooting squirrels out of trees while his family watched. At age 15, he joined the United States military and served World War II as a sergeantmajor with Combat Infantry Battalion 307th Infantry Regiment (later redesignated 2nd Cavalry Division). After hostilities ended, Kilgore returned home to civilian life and began working as a termite inspector. In 1951 he decided to leave his job to become a professional cowboy shooter. By 1957 he had won several national championships at cowboyshooting contests and became well-known within the industry nationwide. In that year he divorced his first wife, went off into self-imposed exile on account of her opposition to his career choice, remarried twice (to two women each), developed pancreatic cancer which killed him aged 52 years old in 1978 but left behind an estate worth $2 million dollars

In 1954, Guymon became an independent city and experienced rapid growth until 1979 when it merged with Oklahoma City to form Oklahoma City-Shawnee County. During the 1980s and 1990s, Guymon experienced significant economic development through big company expansions and new construction projects. In 2000, Guymon was named a community of distinction by Forbes magazine. Guymon is located at (36.799895,-96.765859). It covers an area of , making it one of the largest cities in eastern Oklahoma County at that time. According to the 2010 census, its population was 43,924; up from 36,521 in 2000 and 31,572 in 1990. Its estimated racial makeup is 33% White (non-Hispanic), 68% Black or African American (non-Hispanic), 3% Native American/Alaska Native (non-Hispanic), 9% Asian/Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), 2% Hispanic or Latino (of any race), 8%, unknown (0%)
Guymon is located in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma and was founded by the Cimarron Indian tribe in 1881. In 1907, it became a city and was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer. The population of Guymon was over 10,000 in 1910 and peaked at 25,000 in 1920. It has since declined to around 9,500 residents today.
