Guymon is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,604 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 by settlers from the eastern part of Canada. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and a city in 1912. In 1916, Guymon was renamed Fort Worth because of the large influx of military personnel stationed there during World War I. The fort was abandoned after the war and eventually burned down in 1980. Guymon is located at (36.724691, -98.569594). according to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which is land and (0.6%) is water.[1] The town developed on two main routes: the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline running east-west through its center and US Highway 287 running north-south along its edge. The first store opened in 1907 and soon afterwards other businesses followed suit; until 1915 when Fort Worth became the larger community due to increased military activity nearby during World War I.[2] As most small towns did during this time period, Guymon grew slowly but steadily as people started setting up shop within its limits- with only one grocery store opening until 1941[3]. By 1955, there were five stores and 50 residents living in downtown alone[4]. Growth continued into the late 1960s with three more stores opening before 1970[5], making it an midsize city by today's standards[6]. However, growth stopped once again around 1980 asOklahoma City began to grow rapidly following its completion of Interstate 35W and annexation of neighboring Stephens County[7]. All told, since 2007 there have been only two new buildings built within downtown boundaries: One office building completed in 2009,[8] while another development being planned for 2018 will consist of a high school/community college complex that will include several homes.[9] Guymon experienced significant economic decline beginning around 2000 however recent efforts by local officials have begun to reverse this trend including revitalization efforts around downtown which are now seeing significant year-over-year growthrates averaging over 10% annually since 2006[10][11]. At present day locals continue to invest heavily into their economy through various means such as job creation,[12][13][14][15]; culture & tourism; agricultural production; health care services; companies manufacturing products used throughout Oklahoma City region; retail trade; healthcare related services; real estate development; petrochemical industry
Guymon was an early post-Civil War town in Indian Territory. It was located on the then current day border of Oklahoma and Texas. The first white settlers arrived in 1867, when they were driven out of their previous land by the Ochotis Sioux. The community developed slowly until 1881, when a railroad was built through the area and aided in its growth. By 1902, Guymon had a population of 350 people and had constructed a school, store, and hotel. In 1907, Guymon became the capital of Indian Territory; it remained so until 1907 when Oklahoma became an official state.
