In the early 1800s, families in the small town of Guymon, Oklahoma, were avid hunters and shooters. The town was founded in 1881 by a group of farmers who decided to move from Kansas City. They purchased land east of the Red River and built their first homes on what is now Main Street. Over time,Guymon became known as an agricultural center due to its large acreage for crops and livestock. In 1930, the population of Guymon was 535 residents; it had decreased to 375 by 2000. However, gun ownership continued to be popular in the community until the late 1990s when it began to decline again. Guymon is a town in Logan County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 by settlers from Missouri. The town took its name from General Guymon who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as governor of Texas. Guymon is located on the Arkansas River at (36.747947, -95.569438). It is east of Haskell City and west of Jenks. According to the 2000 census, Guymon has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (2%) is water. The first settler to arrive in this area was Jethro Pugh who arrived around 1887. He ranched some land near present day Guymon and built a cabin there on November 10th, 1887. In 1912, Gertrude Moberly settled in a spot known as “Mountain Top” just east of where the current post office stands today after her husband John Moberly donated 5 acres for that purpose in 1909. Mrs. Moberly had been born in Ireland but raised here until she married John; he had come over with his parents when they were children and knew nothing else but hard work could make them successful hereabouts so he decided to give it try himself! By 1915 there were about 20 people living here including Mr./Mrs./Three Children/Niece/Two Brothers/One Sister living on 640 acres granted by James Aiken to Elijah Bledsoe back then….It wasn’t until 1933 when Dr.(now Mrs.) Donatella Cramer came along that things really started to heat up! She started farming out 4 acres every week thereafter beginning January 1st…..By 1935 only 3 families remained……Poultney Woolley bought out Dr(now Mrs.) Cramer’s share mid year 1935…..Today there are still only 2 families remaining…………..In 1942 during World War II while all other businesses closed due to enemy action we got hit particularly hard with many homes going up in flames as simple repairs proved too much for most folks……The estimated damage done…was $6000 dollars…..When it finally stopped raining again we began plowing everything back together AGAIN!!!!! We now have almost 100 years worth of history right here right smack dab IN THE MIDST OF OUR COMMUNITY!!!!!!!!!!
