This new well made possible continued growth for the community as businesses began to open up along US 66 with easy access to water resources that were previously unavailable to them." In 1931-1932, construction began on what is now known as Main Street which would become one of downtown's most important thoroughfares during its early years while also serving as a source of revenue for local businesses. The original funding came from local citizens who pledged their support during a special election held on November 3rd 1932 which marked the beginning of an era where city government would be more centralized within Oklahoma City than ever before with powers granted specifically to Mayor Jocko Smith Sr., Vice President Hinton Byrnes (later renamed Okemah) and Army Lt.-Gen James Forrest (later Tulsa mayor). mainstreeting
