Guymon is a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 2,490 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County seat and Micropolitan Statistical Area. For years, Guymon was known as "The Cotton Capital of Oklahoma." Guymon was founded by pioneers in 1887. In 1899, it became a city with its own government and police department. The city's growth continued until 1950 when it merged into Muskogee County. Guymon has experienced many physical and symbolic changes over the years – from a rural community to an urban center during the postwar period; then again to a agricultural center during the 1960s-1980s; and finally back to rural status during recent decades. Today, downtown Guymon features several historic buildings dating from before its incorporation into Muskogee County as well as new development such as a shopping mall, movie theater, arena and other businesses.

The first modern day gun light was patented in 1885 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. It was a small, hand held lantern that used a rotating arm to project an image of the target onto a white screen at arms length. The system was not successful and did not gain popularity until after it was developed into the modern day rifle night sight.
Guymon was founded in 1907 by the parents of an Oklahoma Indian boy, John Guymon. The town was named after the then-newly discovered oil field near its location and it quickly became a center for oil production and transportation. In 1930, the town saw its first economic boom thanks to a new oil pipeline that connected Guymon with Tulsa. The town's fortunes fell following World War II, however, as oil prices plummeted. Beginning in the late 1960s, however, Guymon began to experience a rebirth as a bedroom community for Tulsa. Today, the community is home to a number of businesses and restaurants as well as several schools.
