The name "Guymon" comes from the Choctaw words Haha-yuhn or hiya-nuh, meaning "the place where the water runs clear." The Guymon post office was established in 1881 and operated until 1907. The current post office was established in 1907 and has been operating since then. Guymon is also the site of many historic buildings including the courthouse and jail which were built between 1881 and 1901. Other historic buildings include a general store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, Methodist church and Baptist church which were built between 1904 and 1915. Guymon is located near several important waterways including the Arkansas River which provides access to nearby Hutchinson Lake for fishing and boating; White River which flows through townlimits to provide drinking water for local residents; and Big Creekwhich provides irrigation for agriculture around town. Guymon has a fulltime school system with nine schools that serve students grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade as well as one high school that serves students 13th through 17th grades. There are also three otherElementary schools (Kindergarten - 5th grade; Sixth/7th Grade - International Baccalaureate Diploma program only; Eighth/ Ninth Grade - American Standard) as well as two Middle Schools (First - 7thGrade; Second - 8thGrade) as well as one High School (9th Grade). The city experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of its manufacturing sector. However, economic decline began to take hold after the war and Guymon fell behind otherOklahoma cities in terms of development. Today, the city remains a primarily agricultural town with a population of around 50 thousand people. The history of Guymon begins with settlers who arrived in 1907. These early settlers were farmers who had come from Central America and wanted to establish themselves in what was then known as Indian Territory. They built homes on cleared land that now includes portions of downtown Guymon. At first, there were only about 10 families living here, but over time more and more came to live here until it reached its current population size of around 50 thousand people today. The origins of Guymon are intertwined with those of nearby McAlester and Tulsa proper. Both cities were founded by men who wanted to create communities where they could enjoy good lives without having to leave their home country or worry about subsistence costs (Finch). This desire for self-sufficiency led these men to build towns that would be accessible through reasonable transportation hubs (Baumgardner). McAlester quickly became one of the most important industrial centers in OKLAHOMA due to its location on Interstate 40 and its production capabilities within minutes’ walk (Healy). Furthermore, Tulsa’s status as an educational powerhouse helped make it one of Oklahoma’s largest cities by 1930 (Wright). These factors all contributed to McAlester becoming not only an important economic center but also a major cultural center as well: both areas enjoyed high levels cf culture and education before World War II started (Klitschko et al.). Guymon did not experience such rapid growth until after World War II ended however – this is likely because Oklahomans had different priorities at that point in our history (Rogers). Despite this slow start,Guymon nonetheless achieved some significant milestones during this time period including becoming partofthe newOKlahoma Territoryin 1938; experiencing large enrollment increases dueto WWII shortages; hosting major events likeOklahoma’s centennial celebration in 1945;andbecominga popular tourist destination thanks largely to its scenery and agriculture (Langston-Robertson).
