Guymon is a small town in Oklahoma, located about sixty miles northeast of Tulsa. The history of Guymon begins with the arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s. In 1819, a group of Methodist missionaries traveled to what is now Oklahoma and founded a mission near present-day Guymon. The missionaries named the town after their new home,Guymon, Scotland. The first store in Guymon was built on the corner of Old Trail and Elm Streets in 1827. By 1840, there were twenty-four stores in the town. The post office was established at Guymon in 1872, and became known as Home Place post office until it was discontinued in 1990. Until 1959, all mail delivered to or from Guymon was sent through Tulsa. The first school opened for students in 1865 at what is now Fairview Elementary School. It closed due to financial difficulties two years later, but reopened as Wagon Wheel Academy in 1870 under new leadership. In 1895, Wagon Wheel Academy moved to its current location on Seminole Street and served as an elementary school until it closed during World War II; however, it continued to serve as a community center until it too closed during the war. During World War II, much of eastern Oklahoma was destroyed by firebombing raids by Japan; however, few buildings were damaged beyond repair within the town limits of Guyamon itself. On July 6th 1948 local residents gathered around their homes across downtown area when loud noises were heard coming from underground storage tanks located one block south of Center Avenue (now Quail Lane). After determining that these noises were not caused by natural disasters such as thunderstorms or floods Residents went into panic mode and started throwing stones at tanks which had been left unmanned since shortly before the noise had been heard! A few days later locals learned that part of an ammunition dump owned by American forces had also caught on fire! This event helped launch (and continue) local support for laissez faire economic policies which would be critical throughout postwar America GuyMon experienced rapid growth following World War II with increased housing values resulting from wartime demand for replacement parts for military vehicles manufactured locally . Many businesses slowly grew out of necessity such as hardware store (Oprah’s Hardware), grocery store (Pioneer Farms), seed company (Fertilizer), meatpacking plant (George Condon), millinery shop (. . .) One notable business that did not initially succumb to market saturation but quickly expanded because they could produce more products than necessary due to greater demand was oil refineries operated by Standard Oil Company.. These refineries produced gasoline and other fuel products used throughout East Texas WWII created unprecedented demands for labor skills necessitating large numbers offormers moving eastward into rural areas where available jobs were scarce
