More businesses began to open up around World War II as people migrated back into Guymon after helping support their families abroad; several hotels and restaurants were built during that time. In 1963, Mayor Robert Gurney designated Guymon "the Town That Made Tulsa" due to its contributions to economic development within the city limits since then. A major tornado touched down near town on May 25th 1961, damaging many homes and leaving more than 20 people dead or missing; it was one of the deadliest tornadoes in history.
