Guymon, Oklahoma is located in the eastern Panhandle of Oklahoma, about 20 miles south of McAlester and 60 miles east of Tulsa. It was founded in 1907 by General W.G. Hardesty, who named it for his friend, Guymon Swayne, an officer with the U.S. Cavalry stationed at Fort Gibson during the Mexican-American War. The town rapidly grew and developed a strong local economy as cotton farmers produced crops such as corn and wheat; cattle rustlers raided ranching areas; and merchants sold goods related to the oil industry. The townsite was renamed Guymon after General Hardesty’s son-in-law, David Guymon (1862-1940), a rancher who had played a significant role in developing the region’s oil resources. In 1932, David Guymon donated land to McAlester for use as municipal parkland; McAlester designated it home to the OU School of Fine Arts until 1969 when it moved to Oklahoma State University campus in Guthrie. The town also hosted annual Oklahoman Cowboy Western Fair from 1939 through 1945 and 1946 through 1949 before moving back to its original location on West High Street between 1905 and 1907 due to contaminated water supplies caused by oil production in nearby Comanche County. Today, GuyMON remains a thriving community with active businesses including two banks, four churches (Anglican / Methodist / Lutheran / Baptist), three schools (USD 231/Oklahoma Wesleyan/ McAlester Community College), several restaurants and bars including one featuring live music every night outside of its doors since 2007, and an amateur orchestra that plays throughout the year at various venues within walking distance of downtown (including an outdoor amphitheater used for sporting events).
