The town was founded in 1893 by settlers from Indiana, and named after General John Guymon, who served in the Indian Wars and died at battle against Seminole Indians in 1814. Guymon experienced some early growth as a result of its location on the Arkansas River flood plain. In 1902, an irrigation canal was built through the town to help with its growing agricultural economy. In 1907, Guymon became one of only two towns in Haskell County to have electric lights; these were replaced by gaslights around 1920. The post office moved from downtown to a new building constructed on Main Street in 1906; this building still stands today and is used as a Heritage Hall for local events. One of the first businesses established in Guymon was an insurance agency; this business thrived until it closed during World War II due to shortages of insurance products across America. In 1948, construction began on the present day school buildings which would become home to Guymon High School (now known as Eastern Oklahoma State University) and Guymon Intermediate School (now known as Grady Community College). This project took many years due to funding shortages both nationally and locally; however, it ultimately proved successful and today there are more than 50 schools within a radius of GuyMONT Elementary School that use it as their main campus! The economic boom times following World War II were such that many residents relocated into other towns throughout the Tulsa metropolitan area. However, much like earlier generations before them, people from GuyMONT kept their traditions alive including hosting their own annual Fourth OF JULY parade which draws hundreds of participants every year!
