There are now over 1 million people living in Tulsa, McAlester, Edmond, Moorehead, Van Buren, Jenks, Bartow (part), Ottawa (partial), Muskogee (partial), Ponca City (partial), Pryor (partial) and Grissom City (partial). The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company operates a large tire plant west of town from what was once Grissom City Airport; this has led to some industrial development around town including a plastics factory opened by Dow Corning Corporation in 1984; a computer manufacturer called Compaq bought its first equipment from Northwest Bell Telephone Company at Grissom City Airport; Nabisco's popcorn plant near Edmond closed down in 2003 but reopened as an office complex known as "Nabisco Place" later renamed "Chase Tower". Other major businesses that have located within or close to downtown Guthrie include Kofoed Manufacturing Co., which makes concrete shoes for retail stores; Western International Airlines passenger service provides transportation between Tulsa-Muskogee-Edmond airports; UPS ground handling services provide long distance trucking services between Tulsa-Muskogee-Edmond airports; Enron Oil Gas production started at an oil well east off US 69 about 3 miles south of downtown before moving upriver to another well with processing facilities soon afterward followed by pipeline construction
Guthrie was founded in 1871 by James Guthrie, a cattleman and politician. The town served as the county seat of Guthrie County from 1881 to 1893. In 1907, Guthrie became the capital of Oklahoma Territory.
