Guthrie, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by George Guthrie. The town was named for General James Guthrie, the official commander of the Territory of Oklahoma during its early days. George Guthrie moved his family to the area in 1907 and began to deposit soil on what is now Guthrie Lake. In 1908, he incorporated the town and named it after himself. The first post office opened in Guthrie in 1909. The town's population reached a peak of around 2,000 people in 1916, but declined soon afterward due to World War I and other factors. By 1920, however, Guthries had shrunk to just 100 residents. In 1926, the town amended its charter to allow for a single high school; this new school served as the base for several subsequent schools located within thetown limits until 1990 when all five of those schools were merged into one large school District No. 1 (GUTHRIE). By 1930, however, Guthries had fallen back into obscurity- its population only reached 350 people again by 1940. However, since then there has been an increasing trend of growth as more and more people move into the area and take advantage of various business opportunities that have arisen hereabouts such as agriculture (growing corn), manufacturing (manufacturing goods such as T-shirts), trucking (processing agricultural products) and health care services (both private clinics and government hospitals). On July 4th, 1907,[1] George Guthrie erected a small sod cabin near present day Bristow Street in what is now downtown Guthrie[2] to serve as a temporary home for his family while they built their permanent home nearby on Buffalo Mesa Road.[3] On October 12th 1902[4], four years after incorporation,[5][6] George’s father died leaving him with two young children: Mary Elizabeth who would become known as Mrs. George Witherspoon [7][8]and John Wesley who would become known as Mr. George Witherspoon Sr., also known locally as "Pete".[9][10][11][12] Mrs Witherspoon leased land from Cimarron County Commissioners Land Ownership Office #1 which became known later simply “The land” or sometimes called simply “The Farm” because it covered approximately equal amount of territory blocks east/west between US 81 North/South & US 271 South/East at Patterson Avenue & Broadway Boulevard which became part of present day downtown[13]. It should be noted that at this time “The land” included much earlier acreage that comprised today's Britton Park neighborhood including parts of what is currently Elmwood Avenue / Main Street & portions still extant on Patterson Avenue between Broadway Boulevard & Elmwood Avenue / Main Street boundaries beyond where Britton Park presently lies - these boundaries are still accurately depicted on street maps produced today! After about ten years experience leasing & growing crops with no real success we decided to build; so we started building right next door right across from our old lease site! We knew that if we built good things wouldn't come easy but if we didn't try they might get better! And they did – fast! We promptly hired some help – my dad found men who could do all sorts of things; they dug ditches deep enough so steamboats couldn't pass under them without hitting us […] That same year our grocery store opened up […] Our first meat came fresh outta ground beef pneumatic sacks delivered direct from Kansas City through Wichita onto local streets by burros……….. Our milk came straight off buffalo herds killed before winter set in….We fed everyone except Indians living downwind…Thatched roofs dotted fields behind buildings long gone today […] Our water came from creek running through our property deepest below ground level
In 1881, Guthrie was founded by George A. Guthrie and James W. Guthrie. The town was named in honor of General Samuel J. Winchester, the first U.S. military general to die in battle during the Mexican-American War. The brothers built a lumber mill and developed a farming economy that sustained the community for over 100 years. In 1935, Guthrie became one of the cities located in the new Oklahoma City metropolitan area and has grown significantly since then.
