Guthrie was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants, and became an American city after its incorporation in 1907. Guthrie is the county seat of Tulsa County. The Guthrie Wind Farm is located in the town. The town was named for General James Custer and his wife Cynthia (née Guthrie). General Custer's father had been born in what is now Guthrie and died there when young. When General Custer went off to fight with the Indians at Wounded Knee Creek during the Indian Wars, his family moved to Canada where he spent some time before returning to America on horseback. They arrived at what is now Guthrie about 1881 and began to build a cabin called "Curtis". A post office was established there on May 10, 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 11, 1907. In 1907, local businessmen decided that they would like their own town so they organized a meeting which resulted in the incorporation of Guthrie as an independent municipality. On July 9th of that year residents voted 54% against incorporation due to concerns over high taxes and lack of government services available in the new community while also expressing approval for being able to keep their home property separate from other properties within the new municipality limits without having their homes confiscated or sold if they did not move into their municipal boundaries
