In 1881, the Guthrie Grain Elevator was built. In 1907, it was bought by the Guthrie-McPherson Elevator Company and became known as the Guthrie Elevator Company. The company changed its name to the Western Oklahoma Grain and Feed Company in 1912. It merged with the Tulsa Grain and Feed Company in 1916 to form the Tulsa- Western Oklahoma Agricultural Exchange Incorporated (WOGA). The company was acquired by J.P. Morgan & Co. in 1922 and sold to them again in 1934. It closed down in 1935 after a series of ownership changes until it reopened as an elevator company under new management in 1948.
In 1907, Guthrie was founded as a small community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town quickly grew to become a major railroad junction and agricultural center. In the early years of the 21st century, Guthrie is home to over 60,000 residents and is an important educational and economic hub in Oklahoma. Guthrie's history can be traced back to 1887 when two farmers, James W. Guthrie and his son-in-law Cyrus K. Vance, founded the town on land that they had bought from the Wichita people. The town rapidly grew into a bustling commercial center with several businesses including a meatpacking factory, grain elevator, livery stable, post office and school. The arrival of the railroads in Guthrie in the late 1800s helped to drive growth and development throughout its years as an agricultural center. By 1910, Guthrie had become one of Oklahoma's largest cities with over 200 businesses located within its boundaries. During World War I (1914-18), Guthrie played host to large numbers of military personnel who were based at Fort Sill in nearby Durant. This period saw significant growth for the city as many factories were built along Main Street including munitions plants and ammunition depots for both sides of World War I. As war came to an end in 1918, many soldiers left Oklahoma City for more secure wartime locations such as Chicago or New York City but many remain buried at Fort Sill which remains one of America's most famous Military installations today. Following World War II (1939-45), much industry closed down in Tulsa while other companies moved out into new facilities across Oklahoma City making space for what would become known as "the new city". However by 1970 there still remained 350 businesses active within downtown Tulsa despite majority being abandoned since then due to increased competition from newer suburbs outside of Tulsa proper characterized by high concentrations of poverty and crime rates among their populations: these neighborhoods have been renamed 'Gotham' during recent decades following gentrification efforts by developers looking for higher profits through redevelopment projects; however these neighbourhoods continue to bear some similarities with historic parts of downtown Tulsa including architectural styles associated withbeachfront communities during this time
