The Guthrie Gun Case is a landmark case in the history of Oklahoma. On December 1, 1911, a group of men- led by George A. Clements- gathered to purchase a gun from Tom Hardin, an acquaintance of Clements. They were looking for a way to protect themselves during the early days of prohibition in Oklahoma. The men agreed to form a company and buy the gun from Hardin on February 24, 1912. Clements was elected governor of Oklahoma in 1907 and had been considering running for office again when he heard about the Gun Case. In 1908, he became president pro tempore of the United States Senate and soon afterward announced his intention to run for president in 1912. When Clements learned about his plans, he asked his friend Tom Hardin if he would help him find someone to buy the gun from so that he could run successfully without having to worry about federal law prohibiting arms purchases by Senators. Hardin told Clements that he knew someone who would sell him the weapon and within two weeks, all six men who organized the Gun Case had bought guns from Tom Hardin: George A. Clements (now Governor), Harry Wickersham (now senator), John Hance (then secretary of state), Abe Pease (then editor of The Republican; later publisher of The Oklahoman), Amos Purdy (a rancher and farmer)and John Mohawk (a member at large). On May 20th 1918 while serving as captain on patrol duty outside Tulsa Airport after seeing several drunken passengers being transported into town on an aircraft carrier called USS Constitution , Capt Jeffery Latham observed four or five individuals armed with pistols walking up Main Street towards City Hall . After questioning them furtherCapt Latham determined that these individuals were members or associatesofthe local chapterofthe Ku Klux Klan . After returning home tanks fullOf gasolineHe started driving down Main Street leading up behind them .After reaching their houseAt least fifteen shots were fired wounding three persons including Capt Jeffrey Latham !! disgraceful act which caused alot public outcry
