The Guthrie, Oklahoma historyof the town dates back to 1907 when James Guthrie and his family moved from Illinois to what is now Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Guthries were farmers who settled in the area around present-day Guthrie, beginning in 1881. In 1907, James Guthrie and his brother-in-law, J.W. Whitman erected the first frame house in what is now Guthrie. It was a log cabin which they named “The Gables” after their home in Illinois. The first store in town was established by Fenton Waddell on Broadway Street in 1911. By 1915, there were six stores in town with a population of about 100 people. In 1916, the post office was established at what is now Guthrie and mail Question No. 1 was sent through this post office until 1933 when it became Post Office No. 2 due to its location on Broadway Street between Third and Fourth Streets (later renamed Michigan Avenue). In 1935, the first school was built at what is now First Creek Elementary School and opened for instruction on October 15th of that year by Mrs. Cuthberta McKinney (1864 – 1951). That same year also saw the opening of an amusement park called Grizzly Bear Park located east of town on Hargrave Road near present day Tinker AFB; it closed in 1947 following World War II when Tulsa lost its military significance as much as Wichita did during the war years because Tulsa had more industry than Wichita did which led to its decline during that time period; however, Grizzly Bear Park remains an important part of local history today due to its open space status and popular tourist attraction potential! In 1950s & 1960s many residents left for other parts of Kansas or Texas as oil prices dropped causing many businesses closings including one store operated by Mrinaline Pugh which closed closing her business for over 30 years! However some businesses like Mrs Pugh’s still remain active within our community thanks primarily to donations from former customers! Today there are only a few remaining businesses such as antique shops dotting Main Street along with several restaurants locally prominent such as White Sands Cafe down south on Third Street corner thereof serving up delicious food poisoning free breakfast all day long! Finally we can say that since 2007 our community has been celebrating Veteran’s Day each November 10th !!!
In 1907, Guthrie was founded on the east side of the Arkansas River by businessmen John and Nellie Guthrie. The town quickly became a center for cattle ranching and agriculture, and its economy heavily relied upon the transportation industry. The Guthries were also early leaders inOklahoma's oil production industry. In 1935, they donated land to build the Oklahoma State University campus in Guthrie, which continues to serve as one of the largest educational institutions in Oklahoma today.
