Guthrie, Oklahoma is a small town located in southeastern Oklahoma. The community was founded in 1907 by the Guthrie Coal and Coke Company. The company operated coal mines and smelters in the area until it merged with theocalpine Resources Corporation in 2000. Today, Guthrie is home to a variety of businesses including an insurance company, a large convenience store, a post office, and several homes. The history of Guthrie begins with the founding of the Guthrie Coal and Coke Company. This company was chartered on May 5, 1907 as the first coal mine on this site. The mine was originally managed by J.J. Cunningham and his brother-in-law John McNaught. By 1916, there were five mines operating in Guthrie; two were owned by Cunningham’s son-in-law Wm. Hargrave and two were run by McNaught’s son-in-law Jens Pohlmann. In 1920, following the merger of Cunningham’s mines with those of Pohlmann and Hargrave, Guthrie became one of sixteen counties within Tulsa County that formed the Tulsa Consolidated Coal Field District (TCDFD). The TCDFD would continue to operate coal mines through 1959 when it merged into Tulsa County Authority (TCA). In 1965, after years of negotiations between local taxpayers and major energy companies such as Texaco Inc., Pan American Gascoigne & Co., Gulf Oil Corp., Mobil Oil Corporation et al., Guthrie became an independent municipality under charter from Tulsa County Commissioners James Fenton (elected November 3rd) and Harry Davenport (elected November 10th). On January 1st 1966 voters approved amendments to Township Charter No.(1) which provided for municipal council service instead of individual commissioners being elected at large from all sections within township limits; however this amendment did not come into effect until January 1st 1967 when Council members were reelected at large using staggered terms instead of term limits like that proposed for county commissioners. When oil production reached its peak during World War II led to increased demand forcoal products which resulted in numerous layoffs at local factories including those at the oldTalbot Mine where miners had worked since 1892 As work continued throughout peacetime many families chose to leave their homes behind moving westward into towns such as Jenks or Tahlequah while others decided to stay put watching violence increase along Interstate 35 near their homes resulting in various protests known locally as “the move out riots” With enough new construction beginning upriver near Jenks things began looking up until 1969 when rigs started driving downriver again contaminating water supplies leading to more protests culminating with what is now know as “the oil spill” on March 24th 1970 cessation followed by economic recession creating conditions ripe for organized crime groups such as Donny Crayton's White Family gangsters who soon took over mining operations . For many years after these events little was done about restoring abandoned mined fields or cleaning up nearby water supplies making life extremely difficult for residents living downstream from I 35 . However starting around 2006 some organizations such as Oklahomans for Clean Water have made working towards cleanups a priority Today much has changed regarding both energy production and environmental concerns with lawsuits filed against Gulf Oil Corp., ChevronTexaco Inc., Occidental Petroleum Corporation et al.; Texans For Environmental Justice having successfully pushed back state approval for massive fracking projects; Mike Pompeo becoming US Secretary Of State leading calls nationally for increased fracking activities across America Additionally recent news reports highlighting health risks associated with fracking have reignited public concern over this drilling method particularly given President Donald Trump's announced support for Fracking project located just miles away from townspeople
The Guthrie community was established in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants to the area. The first post office was founded in Guthrie in 1885. In 1906, the city name was changed to Guthrie Municipal District, and it became a incorporated municipality in 1907. The population of the municipality increased from 1,500 residents in 1907 to over 10,000 by 1920. The early years of World War I were difficult for the town as many men served in the military but soon after came back home and contributed to their society. During World War II, much of the manufacturing industry shifted out of town due to wartime production quotas but some local businesses continued operations until the end of hostilities. In 1972, Guthrie amalgamated with nearby towns of Haskell and Rogers City to form an enlarged Oklahoma City metropolitan area with a combined population of over 20,000 people.
