Guthrie, Oklahoma is a town located in the east side of McAlester, OK. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Guthrie is home to the McAlester-based Oral Roberts University and has been called "the education capital of America." The town got its start as a small settlement on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1881, Guthrie was named after General George A. Guthrie who fought in Mexico and served as military governor of that country. Today's Guthrie was founded in 1907 by Charles W. Guthrie Jr., father of George A. Guthrie who also founded Oral Roberts University here. The current downtown area was built in 1927 when Tulsa City property owners donated land for what would become the new city hall and civic center complex and school district headquarters. The original storefronts were replaced by more modern buildings over time including the jail which opened in 1951, now known as Andalusian Hall (formerly Memorial Auditorium). Other notable landmarks include: First Baptist Church (1892), Community United Methodist Church (1925), high school (1927), arena/stadium (1976) and Post Office building (1978). Since it became an incorporated municipality in 1907, Guthrie has undergone many changes both public and private including annexation by Tulsa City in 1954; incorporation into McAlester County in 1959; establishment of a city government with first full municipal election taking place on November 3rd, 1974; creation of Parkland Township effective July 1st, 1978; merger with Yukon Consolidated Housing District on January 1st, 1984 which formed Yukon-Guthrie Independent School District No 2 which still operates today as one of McAlester's two schools

Guthrie, Oklahoma is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Guthrie is home to the Guthrie Oil Field and Refinery Historic District and the Guthrie Museum of Art. The oil field and refinery are now part of an energy complex known as the Barnett Shale Formation. The town was founded in 1907 by J.M. Guthrie and named for him because he found oil on his homestead in that year. The first store in Guthrie opened on Main Street in 1909. The post office was moved from its original location to what is now First Avenue in 1925 after it became necessary for mail to travel between Tulsa, Okla., and Guthrie along the Cache River Valley road system. In 1912, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise cotton crops during tough times caused by drought conditions; this group later became the nucleus of what would become the town's pro-business community spirit. In 1935, when settlers began arriving from Wichita Falls, Texas (then part of Mexico), they set up shop around Fourth Street near where present-day First Avenue meets Interstate 35E/Upper Nichols Road (now I-35W). By 1941, Guthrie had a grocery store and two general stores: one on Third Street east of current First Avenue and one south of Fourth Street across from Post Office Park; both buildings still stand today as evidence of early economic development in downtown Guthrie. At that time there were no schools or health clinics within downtown; citizens relied upon their churches for such services until 1948 when Grange Hall Elementary School opened its doors on Second Avenue north of Center Streetscape
Guthrie was founded in 1907 by J. M. Guthrie and his wife, Anna. The town is named for General James Guthrie, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The first store in Guthrie opened in 1911. In 1934, Guthrie became the capital of the new Oklahoma Territory.
