The first modern ammunition plant was built in Guthrie by Armstrong Ammunition Corporation in 1914. It manufactured shells for the First World War and later produced expanding round projectiles for artillery use during the Second World War. In 1949, Armour Ammunition Corporation became the sole owner of Wm., Henschel & Sons Limited Partnership; however, Armstrong regained control of Armstrong Ammunition Corporation’s shotgun rounds business in 1959 through a merger with Purdey Cartridge Co Ltd.. The factory closed down on October 1st 1975 due to economic difficulties but reopened under new ownership a few months later as Rheinmetall Munitions GmbH (now Rheinmetall North America). This company continued production of both shotgun rounds and rifle bullets until 1984 when it announced plans to close its facility again because of rising costs associated with environmental regulations that had been brought about by the US war effort during the 1980s. After months of negotiations between management and unions representing workers at the plant, Rheinmetall Munitions GmbH agreed to keep production going through 1988 but ceased all sales operations on November 1st that year after achieving an overall profit margin above 50 percent for only two years running!
