In 1867, Enid was made part of Cherokee Nation after their war with Anglo settlers ended successfully through negotiations led by Chief Osage John Bivins (1796-1872). This put an end to white Supremacy in Oklahoma and allowed for more local control over schools, government services and social programs than ever before. However, only 4% of Enid's population was Indian; most residents were white Anglo farmers or merchants who had moved into the area from other parts of Western Kansas or Texas during this time period seeking opportunities for growth potentials beyond their original homesteads or counties near Wichita or Austin TX (see map below). One major highlight at this time came when two young women - Maudsie Greenlaw and May Greenlaw - traveled down I-35W from Wichita to meet US Senator Charles Sumner (R) at his home on June 8th 1868 while he was visiting Tulsa for Senate hearings on Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865).
