In 1907, Enid, Oklahoma was founded by a group of ranchers led by J.D. Smith. The town quickly became a center for rifle and shotgun shooting, and over time it became one of the most popular hunting and shooting destinations in the area. Today, Enid is home to an impressive rifle stock history that goes back to 1907. In that year, J.D. Smith began selling rifles in his store on Main Street. At first, these rifles were primarily target pistols designed for pleasure shooting only; however, as time went on and demand increased, J.D.Smith began producing more specialized rifles such as the Model 1903 Springfield carbine which saw extensive service during World War I (1914-18). In 1922, he opened a gunsmithing shop within his store where he continued to produce high quality firearms until his death in 1969. By 1957 Ender had shrunk to just ten businesses with only two insurance companies remaining but it remained an important community through hard times despite widespread drought that year and other economic setbacks throughout that decade including mass layoffs at many industries due largely to World War II boomletting later reversed by recession aftermaths).
