The first buildings in what would become downtown were erected around 1911-12 during construction of the First National Bank building on Second Street west of Center Avenue. By 1913 when First National became bankrupt and assets were sold off to other creditors, many local businesses had closed or moved away from downtown due to high competition from larger cities such as Tulsa. Downtown business operations continued until about 1918 when gasoline lamps became available for lightening displays in central Tulsa and businesses started moving back into downtown with increased efficiency because they could now purchase electricity from centralized generators rather than built their own individual systems. In 1917-1918 two blocks east of Main Street (then Fourth Street) an armory/army detachment barracks were constructed using surplus army materials.. This addition helped support downtown retail activity while also providing military housing for soldiers stationed locally; it remained operational until 1942 when it was destroyed by fire according to reports but still remains standing today as One Armory Place Historic Monument administered by the Oklahoma Historical Society located adjacent thereto at 501 S 4th St., Suite 204 (Oklahoma City OK 73206). On July 25th 1915 Dr J Reynolds installed his first electric service along Third Street between Pine and Spring Streets called Edison Plumbing Service which he operated successfully until 1926 when he retired due health problems related to rheumatic fever contracted while serving in World War I in Europe; he died four years later at age seventy three at his home on Third Street known then as Reynolds Home Nursing Home No 2 where he resided until his death February 16th 1951 after long illness brought about by poor living conditions resultant from diabetes mellitus type II acquired during World War I . . . On October 15th 1922 Mrs Lillie Young opened her newly built grocery store one block northeast corner Third Street and Elm streets under license from Mrs Wm E Childs who conducted general merchandise operation previously located at 10 N Elm street formerly known as Mrs C Smith’s General Store which closed December 14th 1921 having been open seven months prior . . .
