In the early 1900s, Enid, Oklahoma was a small town with a population of about 1,000. The town had one store and one post office. The only means of communication for residents was horse and buggy. One local merchant, George Aiken, developed an innovative product that allowed residents to see in the dark. His invention was called the "Aiken Sword." The Aiken Sword became very popular in Enid because it allowed people to see in the dark without having to use a flashlight or lightstick. It remained an important part of local commerce until 1935 when new technology replaced it

The town had coalitions of farming families that mined coal for their homes and businesses. The townsite was also inhabited by Native Americans who hunted game around the area. In 1925, Enid became one of the cities in Oklahoma Territory when it was created following the Indian Reorganization Act. The city continued to grow rapidly after this time and by 1930 it had over 100 residents. In 1937, Enid annexed the neighboring city of Vinita into its municipality - this made Enid one of the most populous municipalities in Oklahoma at that time! Enid enjoyed some good times during World War II; however, things went bad after Pearl Harbor happened in 1941. wartime rationing caused many businesses to close down which hurt the economy significantly. However, things started to turnaround after Roosevelt announced his plan for war production based on needs rather than profits which helped stimulate business activity once again!

Enid, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 32,521 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Muskogee County and the second most populous city in the state of Oklahoma. The area now comprising Enid was first settled by Bannock Indians in the 1840s. The town name may be derived from an American Indian word meaning "place of water" or "shoreline." The town site was chosen for its location on a bluff overlooking Muskogee Creek. A post office called Enid was established in 1851, and remained open until 1907. In 1906, local ranchers founded the City of Enid to help promote trade with nearby Wichita Falls. At first, only men could vote; however, women soon joined the community and began voting as well. In 1917, enfranchisement of African Americans became available throughOklahoma's new white minority rule under Governor James Crain. In 1920, oilrigs were developed at Watonga Fields near present-day Tulsa and Oklahoman business interests became interested in drilling for oil within reach of their cities and townships. In 1923, then Mayor John Hines proclaimed that all businesses must have their names engraved on street signs or they would be destroyed; this led to the establishment of what is now downtown Enid as the first town square in America west of New Orleans (the original square still stands). During World War II Nurse Ernestine Kappenberger served as Commanding Officer (CO) for nurses assigned to various military hospitals throughout Japan; her husband also worked as a medic during World War II with China’s Nationalist Army effort at North China Plain—a region now known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region—providing health care to Japanese troops stationed there between 1941 and 1945. After returning home from Japan she opened her own clinic at 9th Street NW/NW corner Federal Road NW which operated until she retired from practice in 1974 after over 40 years service thereto.. In 1954-1955 construction began on what is now First Baptist Church located on SW corner Elm Street NE & SW corner 2nd Avenue NE (now known as East Central Methodist Church). This church would become one of Enid's mainstay institutions during its early years including becoming involved in many important civic events such as serving on school boards and various fundraising drives etc.; it currently remains one of downtown's oldest buildings extant! A major event which took place at First Baptist Church occurred when local high school students walked out onto I-40 to protest segregated buses carrying them back home after using public transportation instead of booster cars required for black students only resulted in hundreds being arrested resulting into three days' jail time for some students! Reverend Driscoll preached sermons condemning segregation while Sheriff Jens Ludwig handled things politically! This typeof peaceful protest had never been done before nor has it been repeated since...and that speaks volumes about how far we've come since those days!
