The Oklahoma rifle Trigger Association was organized in 1909, and the first National Rifle Association (NRA) meeting was held in Enid on October 14th of that year. The NRA purchased its first rifle from a Mr. W. H. Caldwell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who had offered to sell them handguns as well. Gun triggers have been used for centuries in Enid, with the first rifles being manufactured there in 1881. There were two types of firearms then- pistols and shotguns- both involving trigger devices which would engage the bolt after it was pulled back by the gun owner. The town was founded in 1907 by Enid residents legendary ranchers Harry and Lillie Payne as a cattle shipping center and processing depot. After World War I, the Payne familyfounded what is now Oklahoma State University (now Oklahoma Wesleyan University). From these beginnings, Enid grew into one of the most significant towns inOklahoma history. The first settler inEnid was James Tatum, who arrived there in 1868 from Illinois. He built his house on Third Street near today's First Avenue. Tatum had no idea that he would live here for more than 50 years! In 1907, when Enid was founded, it was an isolated community located about 20 miles southwest of Tulsa at the junction of present day US-30 and Canadian Highway 14. Even though it wasn't on any major highways or trade routes, Enid quickly developed into a thriving farming community due to its excellent access to water supplies and grazing opportunities for livestock. In 1915, when Tulsa became an independent city Limits were established defining areas such as town limits within which businesses could operate without government assistance; this includedOklahoma Wesleyan University which then moved from Okmulgee toEnid in 1923 (#1 Norman Hargrave Place). The original buildings on 3rd Street still stand today including the old post office building where mail continues to be delivered today (and where Harry Payne met his future wife Lillie). In 1928 local newspapers began publication with a schedule of events being published once per week called "The Roundup." This paper served as both a local source of news and entertainment for locals until 1984 when it merged with the Tulsa Tribune #1 predecessor paper
