The growth of Enid began during World War I when many young men enlisted in the military and started working in munitions plants or other construction jobs around town. Many families moved into newly built housing developments shortly after the war ended so that all members of a family could live within easy reach of one another for work purposes or education opportunities outside of school were available for all children living in rural Noble County at that time (Lenchman and Brownlee). After World War II brought about an increase in manufacturing jobs throughout Noble County as well as new industries such as chemicals and poultry production, Growth continued until the early 1960s when oil exploration became dominant throughout much of Oklahoma causing numerous job losses along with other economic changes which impacted downtown Enid especially (Fowler). With dwindling resources and competition from neighboring states during this time period en masse suburban sprawl ensued beginning with large projects such as White Sands Missile Range eastward through rural Noble County before terminating near McAlester where casinos quickly followed (Hepler). Today downtown Enid remains home to many small businesses while several hundred units have been constructed along Interstate 35 since 2007 adjacent to Expo Park making it one ofOklahoma’s most vibrant downtown areas (Zimmerman et al.). Despite limited progress made towards revitalization over the past few decades DowntownEnidremainsa vital community critical for central OKC region economy which contains more than fifty thousand residents including twenty-five thousand workers employed by sixty-seven businesses employing nearly two hundred students inside Doane University setting up shop each day (Dormer).
Enid was founded in 1907 by James Fenton and his wife, Lula. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first settled. It rapidly grew, reaching a peak of 400 people in the 1930s. However, the town's growth slowed after World War II and it only reached a total population of around 150 people in the 1960s. In the 1990s, Enid began to experience rapid growth again due to its role as the capital of Oklahoma Territory. As Oklahoma Territory transitioned from state to federal government control, Enid became the seat of its new government. With its growing economy and expanding population, Enid has continued to grow over time and now occupies a total area of almost 5 square miles (13 km2).
