Enid is an unincorporated community in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,568 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Kiowa-Cheyenne River Indian Reservation east of the city of Enid. The first permanent settler in what is now Enid was James Irvine, who arrived there in 1875. In 1903, a post office called Enid was established at the junction of US 66 and Kiowa Trail (now US 169). A depot served as the town's mainstay until 1926 when it moved to its present location. The Kiowa-Cheyenne River Indian Reservation bounds much of downtown Enid, which developed primarily as a shopping center with several small businesses catering to Indians and their families. The area around First Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard has become one of the most popular areas for arts and entertainment in town; including several theaters, a music hall, and a bowling alley/arcade that operate today thanks to donations from local parents and grandparents. Downtown also contains two churches: Christ Episcopal Church (founded 1911) and St John's Baptist Catholic Church (founded 1924). Other notable buildings or sites include: In 1907–1908 construction began on what is now Tulsa State University's main campus; which would eventually be renamed after Senator Russell Boren in 1938 upon his appointment as president of Oklahoma State University. When Boren became governor of Oklahoma in 1930 he allocated $5 million towards creating bauxite mining operations on Osage Hills National Monument adjacent to Tulsa; this project never came to fruition due to economic difficulties during World War II. In the early 20th century large numbers of white farmers moving into what are now eastern Oklahomas bought land along both sides of Arkansas Road (US 191), east of present day Enid; this area later became known as White Sands RanchoState Park (). Many residents here remember driving down Arkansas Road during summertime on long trips back homeickly referred to as "the dirt roads". One such road still exists—Oregon Highway 3—which parallels north-south Arkansas Rd near its intersection with White Sands Rd just outside present day Enid. This road once connected White Sands with Tulsa by way of Depoe Bayou before turning southeastward towards McAlester where it crossed into Choctaw Nation territory
Enid was founded by the Ladd family in 1875. The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Chisholm Trail. In 1915, Enid became Oklahoma's first city and is still its largest city today.
