In Enid, Oklahoma, the history of gun security begins with the first firearms. The town was founded in 1907 by a group of farmers who wanted to ranch and live close to the city. Eventually, Gun Violence Prevention Task Force member John Young became involved with Enid’s disarmament movement after noticing that many residents were not taking steps to keep their firearms safe. He convinced Mayor Drummond to create a program called “Secure Ammunition Storage Program” which allowed citizens within one kilometer of any school or college campus to store ammunition securely without having it transported back into town. This measure proved successful and helped reduce gun violence in the town by making it more difficult for criminals to access ammunition while also increasing public awareness about handgun safety laws.
