Enid, Oklahoma is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. It is located on the bank of the Arkansas River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Tulsa. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1907 by Enid native and business executive John Hargrave as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of what would become Tulsa County. In 1916 it amalgamated with nearby Muskogee to form what is now Tulsa Municipal District No. 2. The post office at Enid opened on October 12, 1907, and remained open until it closed on May 15, 1959; its last letter carrier was Wm. Hogue. When World War I ended in 1918, much of western Oklahoma became part of France because the Treaty of Paris defined war-time boundaries as they existed before independence from Britain. French immigrants who had come toOklahoma City during that time were given land east of Arkansas River for agricultural settlement; these settlers named their new town after their home planet—Enid being one example among many such namesakes across America during that time period (). In 1925 Enid citizens passed a resolution asking for city status; this request was granted two years later when Tulsa County erected a board to promote growth within its borders (). After years of planning and construction, Enid’s first public building—an ice cream parlor called Hansen’s)—opened in 1929 just south of downtown (). The commercial district that grew up around Hansen’s included several banks and seven grocery stores (); en route to becoming one of America’s most important shopping centers (), Enid also served as a transportation hub for central OKC () while also hosting two high schools (now both defunct), three churches (all Congregational), two movie theaters (), four bars/restaurants (), twelve schools busing students to local schools (), and fifteen businesses including five banks (). In 1940–1941 an addition to downtown saw the erection of another public building designed by well-known Wichita architect Gilbert Grosvenor: The First United Methodist Church (). Many other large buildings were added over time including regional courts (), jail cells (), health clinics (), nursing homes () and even an air force barracks (); but none quite equaled Hansen's which remains today a popular spot for locals or visitors alike for its unique architecture,, fresh produce from local farmers shops adjoining it,,umshowing live music nightly inside!, excellent food options available all day long (!),and general atmosphere befitting any old small town center!
